Coaching or Counselling

People often ask us: “Should I be looking for a coach or a counsellor?”

It’s an important question because we tend to make the most progress when we are matched with the most appropriate intervention for that moment.

If a person is carrying unresolved pain, trauma or feels emotionally overwhelmed then a space that prioritises stabilisation, processing and healing may give them the best outcomes. Without that foundational work, being asked to set goals and move forward may feel premature and forced.

On the other hand, if a person is feeling emotionally resourced and stable but they’re unclear on direction, purpose or next steps then counselling may feel like circling the same ground.

It’s helpful to get it right.

Coaching focusses on clarity, choice and action, it’s about agency and momentum, what’s happening now, what could be?

Counselling is a great space for processing and understanding the past and how it’s impacting the present.

An analogy that clients often find useful is…

Imagine someone is ‘on the floor’ and struggling to ‘get up’. They may feel overwhelmed, stuck or weighed down by what they’ve been carrying. Counselling can be a powerful space at this point because it focusses on getting someone ‘back on their feet’. In counselling a person can make sense of past experiences, emotional pain and patterns so as to regain stability and feel grounded again.

Once someone is back ‘on their feet’ they might not be sure which direction to go in, this is where coaching comes in. Coaching is present and forward-focussed, you can explore what’s possible. It creates a space where you can reconnect with what really matters to you, clarify diretion and turn insight into action.

You don’t have to come to coaching because you feel like something is wrong or broken, coaching can be helpful in creating momentum and can even be helpful on a routine basis to check in on how and where things are going.

Some people move between the 2 forms of support as they need.

At Fuel Coaching, we work with people who are ready to move forward, they’re looking to reconnect to their values and take intentional steps towards change.

You don’t have to have it all figured out, a simple exploratory call can often bring clarity and you’re welcome to get in touch to see whether coaching feels like the right next step for you.
